About TAKING SOMETHING:   I know what you're thinking. “You were such a jerk, Nick!”  Believe me, I know I screwed up the best thing I had going in my life, but that was kind of my thing. I’d learned how to run cons before I could even form complete sentences, and I'd always been selfish.  But I changed.  Lila forgave me, my brother and I were getting along, and I was trying to make a name for myself in the music world.   At least that was what I was trying to do when I negotiated my way into the recording studio with pop superstar Sadie Sinclair. I thought it would be a piece of cake—charm my way into her heart and into her record label's good graces.   Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I got mixed up in a web of lies, manipulation, and deception. A web that had me questioning my motives and desires altogether.   Was the fame and fortune really worth the price?

Excerpt:   “Tell me again how you plan on pulling this off?”  Lila asked as she sat down on the edge of my bed.  I had called her first thing that morning to tell her that I was heading to Los Angeles to produce Sadie's album, and within the hour she was knocking on my front door to offer her insight and suggest what was and wasn't acceptable Hollywood attire. “Same way I pull everything off,” I answered quickly. “I don't think making her fall in love with you is going to work this time, Nick.” “Seriously?” I smirked. “Now you're doubting my abilities with women?” “Not women in general.  Just this one.” “She's no different than the rest, Rae.” “Yes she is,” she disagreed. “How?” “Well, for starters, she's like the most famous person on the planet.  You're not going to be able to make her fall for your charms, record the songs you want her to, and then just bolt when it's over.  She'll run your name through the mud and people will listen.  So it will have all been for nothing if you can never get another job.” “What makes you think I'm going to bolt?  We might actually fall in love.” “Are you capable of that?” Ouch.  That hurt. “I'm just saying that you might want to consider convincing her in a way that makes her not think she has a future with you.  Nothing is worse than a scorned woman, Nick.  Look at how Brynn took it.  She told everyone that would listen how big of an asshole you were.  It's a wonder you made it through graduation without being murdered.” Brynn was a mistake.  She had run a couple cons with me a few years ago when Lila went and fell in love with my brother.  I should have known better than to sleep with her, but dammit she was good looking.  Not to mention a hellcat in the sack.  I had needs.  Sue me.  It wasn't my fault that she hadn’t understood our arrangement.  Run cons and have sex.  I never said anything about a relationship. “I have other ways of making women bend to my will,” I said, trying to convince Lila. “Do you?” She laughed, obviously not buying it.  “Don't get me wrong, Nick. You’re a good guy, deep down, but you know as well as I do that every single scam we ever ran was based on one thing.  She's gotta be different if you want to turn this chance into a career.  You break her heart and you're as good as done in that world.” “Celebrities date and break up all the time.” “You're not a celebrity.”  She shook her head.  “I mean, you're kind of known, but...” “Are you here to give me a pep talk or completely kick me in the nuts? Jesus,” I sighed. “You know what I mean,” she smiled.  “She's more well known. People will take her side.  Believe me. I've read enough gossip magazines to know what happens to the guy who dumps America's Sweetheart.  Have you seen Kevin Federline lately?” “I don't even know who that is, Rae.” Her eyes went wide and hands went up as if she'd proven her point. “Exactly.”

When I'm not writing or playing the part of wife and mother, you can find me dancing back-up for Beyonce, singing back-up for Miranda, or sunning myself on the beach with a drink in hand.  Here's the thing about being born and raised in a small town—you have a very vivid imagination!  Now, I channel it all to create stories where the girl always ends up with the right guy, first kisses are magical, and a happy ending is just that!

Synopsis

The last thing Holly Harris expected was to wind up nineteen, knocked-up, and all alone. When Coop left to pursue his dreams of becoming a rock god, he left a tiny piece of him behind.
Holly wishes he hadn’t.
Jackson wishes he hadn’t.
Jackson Rowe tried filling the void his family left by drinking, screwing around, and leaving a string of heartbroken women in his wake. Moving back to Sugartown should have been easy, but he hadn’t counted on the fact his sometimes attraction to Holly would still be alive and kicking—and he sure as hell hadn’t counted on her being pregnant with another man’s baby.
They drive one another crazy, and yet they can’t stay away.
When old flames resurface, and even older wounds are torn open, can two people so similar make it work? Or will their stubbornness only drive them further apart?
*Content Warning. Intended for a mature 18+ audience. Contains angst, a crap-tonne of profanity, short-tempered Australian wildlife, and some very pregnant sex.

Excerpt

Holly “We gonna talk about last night?” “No. We’re not going to talk about it. We’re not going to have a repeat performance, and we’re not talking about it.” “Okay then.” Jackson snatches up another handful of popcorn and shovels it in his mouth before chewing with it half-opened. I swear, one day I’m going to shove my fist in there, and then maybe he’ll learn to shut the hell up. “So you don’t want me to eat you out right here on the couch?” I drop the bowl and popcorn spills out all over my lap. I close my eyes, take a deep breath, and whisper, “I hate you.” “No you don’t. You want to, but sweetheart, you got all kinds of feelings for old Jack, and none of them are based on hatred.” “Would you please not refer to yourself as old Jack? You sound like a paedophile.” “Night, Hols. Old Jack’s going to take a shower before hitting the hay. I might even forget to lock the door so you don’t have to kick it down.” “I hate you!” I scream as he saunters away chuckling. “Sure, sweetheart, you just keep telling yourself that.”

Excerpt

Following after her, I find her bent over in front of the refrigerator holding the door open and staring at the contents inside. The way her ass is sticking out unleashes something inside me, and I go semi-hard just from watching her. I instantly feel the need to show her that I’m not some weak, damaged man. I walk up behind her and grab her by the waist, turning her around. Kicking the door shut behind me, I push her to the island, and if I thought I could get away with it, I’d be pressing myself up against so she could feel what she’s doing to me. She’s staring up at me with confusion in her big, brown eyes, and I wonder what the hell I’m doing.
“Hop up,” I tell her, and she complies immediately, surprising me by not fighting it.
I place my hands on her knees, spreading them and stepping closer to her so my hips are between her legs. As best as I can, I take a hold each one and wrap them around my waist, and she involuntarily tightens them around my middle, although her ass is still firmly planted on the counter. This isn’t how I imagined her legs wrapped around me for the first time, but I can’t deny that I don’t love the feel of her gripping my waist tightly.
“Arms around my neck, Charlie.” The confused expression on her face deepens, but she does as she’s told.
“What are you doing, Knox?” she asks, looking up at me, her face only inches from mine.
Swallowing hard, I ignore her question and bring my forehead to hers. “Just do this for me, okay? Don’t fight me on it. Just this once. I need to do this.”
She nods, and I’m not sure she knows what to expect, confirming it when I pull her off the counter. Gasping, she starts to struggle, and I have to brace myself against the counter to keep from falling. Jesus, this woman is so damn defiant, and it can be both sexy as hell and annoyingly irritating.
“Knox, what the hell?! Put me down!”
Fuck, I know I should probably listen to her, but I’ve gotten to this point and I’m not stopping until I can prove to myself that I haven’t completely lost all of my strength. She’s not exactly heavy, but her struggling is making it difficult to keep my one good arm around her as I make my way down the hallway, heading into the guest bedroom. Somewhere along the way she stops struggling, apparently having given up and figuring that it’s just easier to let me do this.
I’m slightly out of breath by the time I get to her bed, and I’m more than happy to release her from my arms. Relief washes over me when she plops on the bed, bouncing once. Whether the relief is from having been able to do it or from having freed myself of her weight. Either way, I’m fucking ecstatic, and even though I’m breathing heavy, it was a small victory for me and my bruised ego.
I begin backing away from her because I know the verbal assault is coming, and I don’t blame her, but I don’t regret it.

About Tessa

I'm a twenty six year old book junkie who is also obsessed with sports. Bengals, Buckeyes, Reds are my teams! I work for the government during the day, hang out with Air National Guard on the weekends, and am married to a guy 15 inches taller than me. We're quite the pair! We currently live right outside of Dayton, OH with our two cats. I've been reading since I was a kid. My mom was a librarian, so it was a given. Heck, she even made sure we watched Wishbone instead of the Smurfs. In 2011 when I graduated from college, my mom bought me a Nook, and then in the summer of 2012 I found this amazing site called Goodreads. I was introduced to so many amazing indie/self-published authors. After reading almost 400 books that year, my husband gave me the push to finally sit down and write my own. It was a rocky start, but over time the words started flowing and I couldn't get Jace and Lexi out of my head. If I’m not writing or looking through tons of photos of hot men, all in the name of research, then you can probably find me curled up with my Kindle, ignoring the rest of the world. I love my sports almost as much as I love my books. My other obsessions include red wine, hot men, country music, and all things Grace Potter. I LOVE to hear from readers, so please feel free to contact via any social media site listed below.

Synopsis

Garrett Andrews has controlled every aspect of his life for as long as he can remember.  Whatever he wanted, he took, especially when it came to Laurel Hart. She was the first person to make his heart skip a beat and capture his soul, allowing part of his control to slip, which uncovered his lie and destroyed her trust in him.  Laurel now lays battered and broken thanks to Chase Peterson, a stalker from her college days, who won’t accept no for an answer. Garrett is determined to win her back, obsessing over her care in an attempt to heal both her body and her mind.  He will go to any lengths to earn back her trust and teach her to let go of the past, but can he follow his own advice and let down his own walls? They struggle to overcome their issues and soon Chase is after her again, fixated on staking his “claim” with a startling revelation that links both the past and present.  Can they find happiness with each other or is their too much to overcome?  Only time will tell if they can learn to let go.

Prologue

Laurel

I needed to hold out to make it to Garrett’s penthouse.  I could feel the walls closing in around me as a sense of heaviness invaded my body, weighing me down.  My vision began to blur.  My mind was reeling. Come on, just hold out a little longer. You can do this.  You need to get to Garrett.  His security guys probably see what a mess you are and he’s already on alert.  He’ll be there for you.             My mind wanted to argue the fact that I’d just pushed him away from me moments earlier, but I knew Garrett; once his mind was set on something he wanted, he wouldn’t give up easily.  I just prayed the same held true for me.  I hated to admit it, but I needed him now more than I ever had.  He was the only thing going through my mind as Chase slammed in the walls and counter and as he pulled me down into the glass.  Normally I’d have given up and just taken the beating, but I could hear Garrett’s voice encouraging me to fight, to move out of the past and focus on the future.  I felt the weight of the frying pan still in my hand, reminding me how I finally got off a clean shot to Chase’s head and managed to run for it.  Luck had been with me when my neighbor stepped off the elevator and the elevator doors started to close on their own.  I had one shot at escape and the only place I could run was back into Garrett’s arms. As I entered the key code for the penthouse, I prayed he would still be there to catch me.             Everything around me seemed to move in slow motion as the elevator opened on his floor. I know my feet moved, because my body was inching closer to Garrett’s shocked face. I could barely hear his words, “What the hell happened, Laurel?” I could almost focus on Thompson and Dillon running past me, one heading for the elevator, the other to the stairwell. I somehow managed to squeak out, “Chase.”             Garrett’s arms were outstretched, but he wouldn’t touch me.  Why? Help me! I wanted to scream. Hold me! Then the world seemed to go black and I could only hear him curse, “Fuck,” before feeling my body drop. I heard the clang of the frying pan hitting the floor. I expected my body to be next, but I felt the warmth of his arms encase me, pulling me close to his chest as he gently lowered me to the ground.             “No, Laurel! Oh, God, no!  Stay with me, baby.  I’ll make sure we get Chase and make him pay for what he’s done.”  His voice, normally so composed and controlled, was shaking and I felt moisture hit the sides of my face.  Could he be crying?  The man who was always in control of everything was actually crying!  “Stay with me, love.  I’ll make this right, just don’t leave me.  I can’t take losing someone else in my life. I can’t lose you.”              I tried struggling against the haziness of the darkness, urging myself to wake up so I could hold his hand, but no matter how hard I tried, my body seemed unwilling to do what my brain so desperately wanted, to soothe him, to reassure him I was still here, that I still cared for him.              Time seemed to tick away as Garrett held me close.  “Why couldn’t I have just followed you down?” he chastised himself. “Why didn’t I fight harder for you?  You mean everything to me.”  His voice was choked with emotion.  I meant as much to him as he did to me?  How could this be?  We were always good in bed together, but he never expressed this level of emotion.                            The elevator dinged and I could make out the squeak of wheels and the drop of heavy bags onto the floor.  “Thank God you’re here,” Garrett said, and I felt his body shift.  “Someone attacked her in her apartment and she has low blood sugar. She’s crashing!  Help her! Do anything you have to do, just save her, please!”  The level of desperation in his voice was a straight hit to my heart, to my soul.  I wanted to yell out, “I’m still here, Garrett!  I can hear every word you’re saying!” but I could hardly feel my mouth to open it.             “We need you to let go of her hand and get out of the way so we can help her, sir.  The best thing you can do is give us room to do our job. We’ll do everything in our power to get her the help she needs.”             “Garrett, please step away, let them do their work,” Thompson’s voice rang out.  He must have returned with the paramedics.  He never used his first name, why now?  I heard the cracking of a voice and muffled tears.  “She’s got a fiery spirit, much like yourself Garrett.  If anyone can pull through this, she will.”  Thompson’s voice was a little shaky, but his words seemed to settle Garrett, as the sound of tears halted.             Garrett’s voice was laced with fear and emotion. “Did you catch—” The question was left open ended, but I knew who they were talking about.  I strained my ears, trying my hardest to focus on their words. I needed to know if they caught the jerk who did this to me.              “Now is not the time, sir.  Your focus needs to be on Miss Hart, while mine will be on handling this bastard.”  I’m sure Thompson didn’t expect me to hear the hushed tones in which he whispered, “I’ll update you more later; he had escaped the apartment by the time we got there.” He paused and I felt Garrett’s body stiffen.  “The police already have issued an APB and we have every available man out there looking.  I’ll stay behind to help with the crime scene and fill the police in on what we know. You go with your girl; take care of her, she needs you.”              I felt a sharp stab to my finger and a number called out; it must’ve been the paramedic.  “She’s at 40 and dropping.  We need to start a glucose drip to get her sugars back up.”  No wonder I can’t fight this haze; my sugars are too low.  “Let’s get her in a neck brace and onto a back board. We need to transport immediately.”  I felt strong hands move around me and my body being secured to something stiff. I couldn’t move; not that I could before, I guess.              “Are you related to her, sir?” a different voice asked.             “She’s my girlfriend.  She means everything to me.”  His voice broke on the last part, like he barely managed to get the words out.  I’m his what?!  Since when did I become his girlfriend?  I’m not complaining, but an update would’ve been appreciated here.  We were fighting up until…             “We’re going to transport her to the hospital, sir. Did you want to ride up front with the driver or meet us there?”  I felt the stretcher lift up and push towards the direction of the elevators.              “My father, Dr. Waters, will be meeting us at the hospital,” I heard Garrett say, his voice a lot more confident than a moment ago.  “I’d prefer to ride up front with the driver.”             The voices were muffled for a while, but I felt his hand squeeze mine and the gentle brush of his lips across my forehead.  “Please be okay, my love.  You have no idea just how badly I need you in my life.”             Somewhere along the ride to the hospital, my adrenaline rush began to fade and the pain of what happened started to take a toll on my system.  “Her blood pressure’s increasing and her heart rate is up!” a voice called. Please, God, let me get through this so I can make things right with Garrett.  I need to tell him that I forgive him, that I overreacted when I found out who he is.  I need to tell him that I love him.              I heard someone yell back over the radio to administer something and within seconds, I felt the coolness of the medication slip through the IV line.  The pain was more tolerable, but the darkness finally had its way and pulled me under.

Change is Good
“I want to kiss you so bad … but if I kiss you, it will change everything,” he says in
that gravelly voice.
“Change is good,” I whisper.
Rolling to his side, his mouth is centimeters from mine. I can’t make myself move
although I’m aching with want. But I haven’t been kissed—ever. And I haven’t kissed
anyone since that time on the monkey bars in seventh grade when I stuck my tongue in
Brian Thomas’s mouth on a bet. I shocked the shit out of him, and he didn’t even kiss me
back. When the bell rang, he jerked back and hit his head hard, sending him to the nurse
for the rest of the afternoon. Not my finest moment.
“I don’t want to lose my best friend,” he tells me.
I bring up my other hand and run it over his jaw. “You’re not going to lose me. No
matter what. We’ll still be friends.”
“Relationships ruin friendships. We’ve seen enough of that.”
I shiver with that truth. “True. But we’re different. We’ve been together since before
we were born. I can’t live without you, so I won’t hurt our friendship.”
Bringing our entwined hands up, he kisses my knuckles. “Me either. We’ll take it
slow, all right?”
“All right, my golden boy,” I whisper.
The effect of my words is instantaneous; the blue in his eyes intensifies to boiling.
He leans in, his lips brushing mine softly, “Denver,” he whispers against me. “I’ve
always wanted to make you mine. Ever since I understood what that meant. I’ve never
seen anyone but you.” And even though his eyes burn with passion, I hear a little tremor
in his voice. Now, him always putting off those girls makes a whole lot more sense.
“I thought we were taking it slow,” I chastise, but I delight in knowing that he feels
something more for me.
“I just want you to know that I don’t take this lightly. You’re the most important
person in my universe. And I’ll do anything to protect us.”
His declaration unleashes a torrent of need in me, and I no longer want him to kiss
me—I need him to kiss me. “Greer, will you shut up and kiss me, please?”
“Yes, ma’am,” he says with a laugh, and bringing one of his hands up, he cradles my
jaw and draws my lips to his. My free hand skims down to rest at his waist, his jeans
riding low on lean hips and exposing warm, bare skin. His lips are soft and explore mine
as I match his movements. I feel indulged—spoiled by his goodness. I try to savor how
tender and sweet he is even though I am impatient for more, so when I feel his lips part, I
follow suit. His tongue sweeps in, seeking and teasing. I hear myself moan. I’m almost
embarrassed by my eagerness, but when his moan echoes mine, I feel reassured.
He pulls back after a few more seconds and places a gentle kiss on my lips, then on
my nose. “Denver …” he breathes. My name packs a punch, and I feel it everywhere.
Keeping my eyes closed, I just nod and lick my lips, trying to savor every bit of him
and his sweet words.
