 I stretched my arm out and placed a hand on the cool concrete, the grit and dirt sticking to my palm.  Such a contrast to the warmth I felt with Ryland firmly pressed up against me.  The curves of my backside fit perfectly against his long, lean frame, our skin heating up the chill around us. The fall weather had descended upon our small Midwestern town almost overnight.  It seemed like only a week or two ago we had been wearing shorts and flip-flops.  Now it was jeans and jackets.  Well, actually, now it was nothing. I felt my cheeks heat as I thought about what we had just done.  I wasn't embarrassed.  Far from it.  In fact, I'd never felt more sure about anything in my entire life as I was about what had just happened with Ry. “That was incredible,” he whispered against my neck as he traced lazy circles on my shoulder with his fingertips. “Yeah,” I breathed, rolling onto my back to look up at him.  The soft glow of an outdoor utility light crept through the open side of the airplane hangar, barely lighting up the space.  “Never imagined our first time being on a blanket spread out on a cold, hard floor, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.” “Me too. Let’s get on that then,” he said with a wicked grin before he pressed his lips to mine.  Propping himself on one arm—his hand resting against the side of his head—he snaked his free hand under one of the flannel blankets he'd commandeered from an airplane parked beside us. I liked this side of him.  The side that wasn't perfect and calculated.  The side that just did, said, and felt what he wanted.  He was literally feeling his way up my body—his hands smooth and rough all at the same time—sending all of my teenage hormones spiraling out of control.  We were living in the moment, which was exactly where I preferred to be. “You know how much I love you, right?” His face became very serious, almost concerned.  “I wanted tonight to be special.  I thought we'd go back to my house after we looked at the planes.  My parents are gone and...”  He was back in his head, thinking about his meticulously thought-out evening.  Doubting his ability to be perfect.  He did this sometimes—overanalyzed things.  “It didn't go exactly as I planned, but—” “It was perfect,” I assured him. “Plans, schmans.”  I pulled his face to mine, giggling, my lips barely grazing his.  “And I love you, too.” That was the thing about Ryland—I saw a side of him that no one else saw.  I could probably say the same for him about me.  Until him, I’d never felt like I was going to amount to much, but he believed in me, even when I didn't—which was most of the time.  When I was with him, I didn't feel like I needed to do everything in my power to piss people off.  He made me want to stay in this Godforsaken town with a family that ignored my existence.  They ignored it until I did something wrong—which was about ninety percent of the time.  Then my stepfather made sure to let me just how worthless I was. “So do you feel like a rebel?” I asked.  “This being your first breaking and entering and all.” It had been his idea to sneak on to the airfield—something that was much more in my wheelhouse than his.  I was the one who usually threw caution to the wind.  He was the good boy.  The straight-A student.  The doting son. “Oh yeah.” He laughed. “I'm a regular badass.  Nothing like walking through an open gate to an abandoned shed.”  He cast his arm out sarcastically in the vacant space above our heads.  Nothing but sheet metal and wooden beams.  A handful of airplanes were parked around us with a smattering of fuel cans, tools, and parachutes hanging from the walls.  “I'm not sure we actually broke into anything.  More like casually strolled in.” We lived in a town where people left their front doors unlocked.  The kind of town where everyone knew everyone and all of their business.  Truitville. It was a place with a minimal crime rate.  I think that night, that's what we’d both thought: What's the worst that could happen? “So what's next then, Clyde?  Wanna rob a bank?”

Knox reaches over and pushes the braid that’s lying over my shoulder to my back and leans over to kiss my exposed shoulder. My eyes close and I want to wrap our time up here in a jar and carry it with me everywhere I go. Everything in this moment is perfect. I’m happy and content which hasn’t happened in some time. I’m always so guarded around everyone except Summer. The reason behind my wing tattoos is because when I finally decided to get out from under Mom and Dad I wanted to find my wings and be my own person. I wanted to grow, change and find my way in life.

“Jas,” Knox says so low it was barely audible.

I open my eyes to the sound of his voice only to feel a tickle on my right shoulder. I don’t move an inch because I know what it is. Out of the corner of my eye I can see a beautiful black butterfly with four spots, white and then blending into purple, on each side of the wings. The end of the wings are all jagged but the intensity of the colors draw away from them.

Knox is able to slip away as the butterfly just sits perched on my shoulder, lightly fluttering her wings. I hear the sound of Knox’s camera snapping pictures as he walks around capturing different angles. I turn my head inch by inch so I can get a better look at the beauty sitting on my shoulder.

A lady who’s wearing a uniform with a patch that shows that she works here comes over to my other side and wipes something cool on the top of my left hand which is resting on my thigh. When she’s finishes she simply walks away. What the hell was that about?

Minutes later the butterfly sitting on my shoulder flies away and another tiny white butterfly lands on the top of my right hand in the exact spot that the employee rubbed whatever it was on my skin.

Knox takes his seat beside me again. “It’s sugar water. The butterflies love it.” He nods to the sign in front of the waterfall. “I read it on that.” Knox adds after I give him a look of disbelief that he would know such a fact.

I lift my hand in the air and the butterfly takes off to a nearby flower. I place my hand on Knox’s leg and give it a little squeeze. “Thank you for bringing me here.”

He places his large hand on top of mine, “You’re welcome, Beautiful. I’m glad you like it.”

I grin and offer her a fresh bottle of water, which she accepts, unscrews the cap and takes a sip. Fuck, she has beautiful lips. Lips that look amazing wrapped around the head of my cock. “It’s not a crime to belong to a gym,” I reply. “My gym?” “Do you own it?” I ask with a grin. She laughs and shakes her head. “No.” “It’s not far from my apartment, and it’s convenient to work, too, so here I am.” She nods and glances down, not sure what to say next. “The cake was delicious today,” I comment casually, giving her the opportunity to talk about her work. “Oh, good!” She grins and joins me as I walk toward the smoothie bar, pull out a chair for her to drop into at one of the tiny two-person tables and sit opposite her. “I’m glad you enjoyed it.” “You do good work. Leo and Sam are always talking about your cupcakes.” “Leo and Sam keep me in business, I swear.” She laughs, sending electricity down my spine. “They’re very good customers.” I nod, watching her. “I like your shorter hair,” I murmur and reach out to brush the ends with my finger, enjoying the softness. “Most men like long hair,” she replies softly. “I like long hair, too. You look beautiful in both.” She frowns and glances away from me. “Why did you cut your hair, Nic?” She shrugs and won’t meet my gaze. “It was time for a change.” “Try again,” I reply. She turns her eyes to mine and squares her shoulders, firms her chin. “It was time for a change.” That’s a lie. I cross my arms over my naked chest and drag my finger over my lip, watching her squirm. She isn’t a good liar. Good. “Okay.” She sighs, relieved, before I continue. “For now.” She scowls at me, making me laugh. “Friends don’t lie to each other, little one. The sooner you remember that, the better.” “You’ve known me for three minutes, Matt. Don’t assume you know all there is to know about me.” “You know what they say about assuming,” I murmur with a grin. “Well, you are an ass,” she replies and then giggles. I lean in and rest my mouth next to her ear. “This ass would love to smack your pretty little ass until it glows,” I whisper so only she can hear.
