He’s looking down at me, making me feel small at five feet two inches. He has to be at least six feet tall. Broad shoulders. His suit today is gunmetal grey with blue or black pin striping—I can’t tell which. His shirt is a beautiful lavender color with a darker purple tie. 

"How do you know I'm not an addict?" I ask, softly. 

He smiles at me, warm, genuine. "Because, you've come to return the money I left you last night as a tip." My jaw falls open. 

"How"—I swallow hard—"did you know?"

His smile fades a little. "Because, why else would you come down here?"

I close my mouth and look down at the floor. His ability to read me is really scary. 

"Since you haven't eaten since last night, I'm going to take you to lunch."

I feel my face flush bright red, both in anger and complete irritation. "That is not why I'm here. I've survived for my entire life fending for myself, I don't need some rich hot shot business mogul buying me food." I reach into the pocket of my bag and pull the folded up paper from it. I thrust it towards him. He refuses to take it. Tears of frustration trickle down my cheeks. "Damn it Mikah, take it." I push it at him again and again he refuses. "I'm not a damn charity case. I don't need your money or your food." 

The bell chimes. We’ve finally reached the skyway. As soon as the doors open, I drop the folded up paper with his money in it and bolt from the elevator, turning left, hoping and praying I can get away. 

"Vivienne, stop." I hear him say behind me. I keep going, walking quickly but not running. Yet. I'm trying hard to not make a scene.

But he doesn’t seem to care about that. He catches me quickly, spins me around. I grab hold of his arm to catch my balance so I don't go sprawling onto the floor.

    Sugar. I needed more of it if I was going to make it through this day. The chocolate croissant and caramel latte I had this morning wasn’t near enough to combat the massive lines, the noise, and disgruntled people that filled the DMV. Whatever in hell made me think that working at the Department of Motor Vehicles, here in Alaska, was a good idea?
    Maybe it was the good pay. Maybe it was because I got weekends off.
    Or maybe it was because I had a moment of temporary insanity that unfortunately coincided with me saying, “I accept,” when I got offered this job.
    Besides the fact that the lines were permanently out the door, the computer systems were temperamental at best, and my boss was a complete broom rider, my stash of chocolate and Sour Patch Kids was empty.
    That meant someone was going to die today.
    I glanced back up at the ninety-year-old woman whose head barely cleared the insanely high counters we stood behind and tried to hold on to my patience. “Mrs. Eldridge,” I said extremely loudly. “Like I told you last week, you have to go and get new glasses before I can renew your driver’s license.”
    “I have new glasses,” she insisted.
    Lord, save me now.
    “You got those ten years ago. You need some from this year.” Or decade I finished silently.
    She shuffled out of the line like a turtle and I took her slowness as a chance to really search beneath my station and chair for a long-lost piece of sugar. Anything. Even a stray jellybean would likely find its way into my blood stream at this point. Of course there was nothing. I briefly considered hiding beneath my desk until five o’clock. My car. I had an emergency stash in my car. I glanced at my watch. I had another hour until I was able to take a fifteen-minute break.
    A pair of black pumps appeared before me and I inwardly groaned. Just what I needed—a run-in with the witch. But instead of being greeted by her condescending, screechy tone, an icy-cold red can appeared before me.
    Hallelujah, praise the Lord, it was caffeine and sugar!
    I snatched the Coke out of her hand and popped the top, taking a large, satisfying chug. The bubbles crowded down my throat, slightly burning, and I took another swallow.
    “I love you,” I murmured to Lela, the girl who worked right beside me.
    She laughed. “I know that look when I see it.” Then she straightened and whispered. “Witch alert.”
    I shot up, my head bumping into the counter on the way. I wanted to shout out in pain, but I clamped my mouth shut, not wanting to draw the attention of my boss, Satan’s assistant.
    I turned back to my line, my eyes colliding with a broad chest. I looked up, and the can slid out of my hand, hitting the floor with a thud while fizzy liquid poured over my favorite boots.
    I didn’t even notice.
    “What the hell are you doing here?” I growled as I looked around for something sharp I could stab him with.
    A thick brow arched. “So is this where you spend your days? As if the DMV isn’t a horrible enough place to visit without the poor people of Alaska having to tolerate you.”
    There wasn’t enough sugar on this planet that would save him. I reached out and picked up the black phone. If I couldn’t bludgeon him to death here at my place of employment, then I could at least call the cops. I began dialing, but he reached over and cut the connection.
    I slammed the phone down on his hand, which was still pressed on the hang-up button. Breath hissed between his teeth and his green eyes shot to mine. “Careful, George, you’re pissing off the wrong man.”
    “My name isn’t George.”
    He shrugged, pulling his hand away from the phone. “When you have a man’s name, does it really matter?”

My Thoughts:

I was really looking forward to reading Banished from Grace by Aria Williams. I read the synopsis and thought that it was going to love it, and there were so many 5 star reviews that I seriously thought it was going to be great. Unfortunately, Banished from Grace did not meet my expectations :(.

I am going to start off by explaining the things I had problems with, and why I just didn't get into it.

 

The first thing I had a problem with was the setting of the story. The majority of the story takes place in a hospital. Don't get me wrong, the author did a great job in explaining all the medical terms and what not, but I just couldn't get into it. I just felt that the story was stuck in that one place. There were not a lot of interesting things happening, because Nardia was stuck in trying to solve what truly happened with a girl's and boy's father (can't expand on this, because I don't want to ruin the story).

 

The second problem I had with the story was Nardia's character. Don't get me wrong, there are a few qualities that I loved about her character, but I just couldn't quite connect with her character. This girl really got on my nerves when it comes to relationships. Nardia has two love interests in Banished from Grace, Regan and AJ, and one of these I just don't like at all! I seriously felt like jumping in the book and slapping some sense into Nardia. When I thought she was going to pick the right guy, she goes on and picks the guy I don't like. The other problem I had with Nardia's character is that she sort of complains about being immortal. I understand where she is coming from with this, because she has had to see all of the people she knew, loved, and cared about die when she just keeps on living.

 

The third thing I had a problem with, and thought was really random was one of the sex scenes. This is one of the first sex scenes, and it happens really early in the story. I just felt that this was a really random place in the story for the characters to have sex. One minute she is walking her dog where she comes to one of the guys place, and the next minute she is inside having sex with him. They have not even known each other for a day, and they are already having sex, but later on in the book I understand the quick connection between these two. But still this sex scene just came out of the no where.

 

A few of the things I did like about the story.

 

The first thing I LOVED about the story was AJ. I just felt in love with this character the moment I read about him. Who wouldn't fall in love with him? He is sweet, caring, mysterious, speaks different languages, makes kick-ass coffee, can sing to your very soul, and is a total hottie. I wish there were more AJ scenes in the story, because whenever he appeared the story got interesting.

 

The second thing I loved about the story was the way Nardia starts to remember fragments of her past. These were definitely my favorite scenes in the story. Aria Williams did a wonderful job in coming up with this idea (the way she is able to remember her past). It sort of reminded me of the novel Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz, and how her characters remember their past lives, but it is very different from Aria Williams. You will just have to read the book to understand, because there is no way I can explain it without ruining the story.

 

I loved the whole paranormal concept of the story. I thought the character's powers were really unique, and different from what I have read before. I have only read a few of these books before, but the powers of these characters stand out from what I've read before. I don't know if this will be the same case for other readers, but to me it was unique.

Overall, I just couldn't connect with the majority of the story and Nardia's character. Just when the story was getting interesting for me, something would happen that I would just lose my interest all over again.

 

Will I be reading the second book in the series? Hell Yes! Just when the story was getting interesting Aria Williams ends it with a Cliff Hanger!!!! I scrolled down on to keep reading, and I realized that I had just reached the end. I just have to read the second book to see what will happen next. I would also love to know more about the rest of the characters, because what I learned is that they are not what they seem to be. Can't wait to get my hands on the second book!

 

 Final Verdict: 3.5 Stars
