Synopsis:

"It's an emotional story that will take the reader back to those feelings that made the late teen years such a powerful time."

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life.

Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

My Thoughts:

Time passed, but I really wasn't doing anything to pass the time.

Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney was a great beginning to a series :D! The story was different from what I have been reading so far, and I enjoyed every part of it. It is a coming of age story with a little tragedy in it. The bridge between YA and NA is really emerged into Beside Your Heart. What do I mean by this? It feels like you are reading a YA book from chapter one, but then it emerges into NA territory with the sexual scenes. Of course the Prologue and Epilogue are in the NA age category. Now, one thing  I have to mention that really stood out to me was how Mary started the Prologue in Nicki's POV, and ended the Epilogue in Adam's POV :).

The other two stages were depression and acceptance, and I was stuck somewhere between the two of those.

I have to say that right from the start I was touched by Nicki's character. Nicki experiences a tragic accident that leaves her permanently scared, and without her sister. Right from the beginning of the story Nicki is suffering from a great loss, and doesn't know how to be open about the accident with others. Of course this changes once she meets Adam :). Like I said at the beginning, I just loved Nicki's character, because Mary Whitney made her a lovable character. What did I love about Nicki's character? I loved that she is strong about her sister's loss and with everything that is thrown in her path. I am not saying that she doesn't get hurt or suffer about it, but she is always able to get out of the gutter. Her character doesn't really mature much, because she has always been matured. Does her character develop? I really don't see much of a character development, but she does learn how to be open about her sister's loss. I am really hoping to see something more out of Nicki's character in the second book :).

I thought about Adam--- the big change in my life in the last month.

What can I say about Adam's character? My god, this boy seriously frustrated the hell out of me. I mean it is not his fault that he keeps leaving for vacations and that he has to leave by New Years. But still it just got on my nerves that for a moment he thought that it didn't really matter to Nicki. The poor girl has already suffered the loss of her sister, and her comes this amazing guy that makes her happy and he has to leave her? Yup, didn't really love that at all. I'm not saying that I didn't like his character, because I did. I liked that he is able to help Nicki release all of the hurt she has been feeling with her sister's loss, and that he makes her happy. He does have sweet gestures towards her. I believe that Mary Whitney gives us a glimpse to Adam's true emotions, thoughts, and feelings in the Epilogue :). So I am really hoping to get to read from Adam's POV in the second book (not saying it will happen, but would love to hear a little more from Adam's POV).

Everything in my life felt easier with Adam...

I like Nicki and Adam as a couple, and their relationship is both hot and sweet. What I love about Adam in their relationship is that he is always there for Nicki. He listens to her when she is pouring her heart out to him. I also love that Adam makes Nicki confident about her scars, because he loves her the way she is. Nicki also supports Adam in their relationship, because she supports the fact that he will have to leave her and they might not see each other again. I know a lot of girls would be moping around or pretty pissed off about the whole situation. Nicki is different, because she learns to accept this and is always there for Adam. So Nicki and Adam's relationship is really that they are always supporting one another, and loving each other to the fullest :).

Nicki still felt something, and that alone was enough.

Beside Your Heart by Mary Whitney was an enjoyable read and a great start to a series! The story is different from what I have read and I just grew attached to Nicki's character. I finished Beside Your Heart in three days (was also reading another book), because it is a really fast paced read. I just have one little complain for Mary Whitney. Did you really had to end it that way?!?!?!? Why did you just have to leave their story like that! I am really looking forward to reading the second book in the Beside Your Heart series :D!

Final Verdict: 4 Stars

EXCERPT:

We said our goodbyes, and Adam guided me to his black Honda. My stomach did flip-flops. This had been a very bad idea. Lisa was right. This was not good for me.
Adam opened my door, and I grasped for a way out. “You don’t even know where I live. It could be really out of your way in BFE.”
“BFE? Where is that?”
“It’s just a more polite way of saying Bum Fuck Egypt.”
“Of saying what?” He laughed.
“Oh, uh, Bum Fuck Egypt. It’s kind of an American saying for the middle of nowhere.”
Closing his eyes for a moment, he shook his head and grinned. “Bum. Fuck. Egypt. So you fuck someone in the bum in Egypt and that means the middle of nowhere?”
“In the bum?”
“Bum. It’s another word for arse.”
“I never really thought of it as being someone’s ass before.” I giggled. “You might be right, though. I thought it was more like you were a bum and fuck was short for fucking, as in ‘fucking Egypt.’ Does that make sense?”
“The whole thing doesn’t make sense, but it’s funny.” He leaned against the car door with the same look in his eye as when we’d talked about sexual frustration in class that other day. “You know, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard an American girl say fuck.”
I was in an eye-lock with him, biting my tongue. I bet Meredith liked to have sex all the time, but she’d never say fuck. “It’s not very ladylike,” I said.
“But you’re not bothered.”
“Well, I try not to say it.”
“Of course, but you don’t seem to bother much about what people think of you.”
I looked down, wondering if that was true, and the scar on my arm caught my eye. It was a perfect example. With all that I’d gone through, I didn’t fucking care. I shrugged. “Unless they’re my friends or family, it doesn’t really matter, does it?”
“No, it doesn’t.” He rested his chin on the door as he studied my face. I felt like I was being appraised again. With him being British and all, I wondered if he thought I should be more proper. Maybe that’s why he liked Meredith. A moment passed, and his voice brightened again. “You just said you lived by the school. So do I. Your home can’t be that far away.”
Excerpt 5 (Reading Past My Bedtime; Wine Relaxation and my Kindle)
Damn. He really was cute. His hair was longer and a little scraggly, and his clothes were more rumpled than Adam’s. If he didn’t have an English accent, he would have looked like a surfer boy. Plus he was nice. I wondered if Adam had said anything to him about me. Regardless, I thought I’d be nice back.
“Well, Adam and I have two classes together. You’re about to be taught economics by the soccer coach. If you’re lucky, you might learn how to balance a checkbook. English is at the end of the day. You’ll hear about Puritans there.”
“The Puritans? Weren’t they Englishmen who came to America? They were oppressed in England because of their religion.”
“That’s right.” I held his gaze. He was definitely older and confident, and I was pretty sure that if Rachel saw me talking to him, she would be pissed if I didn’t flirt a little. I leaned against my locker and said, “Religious oppression. Sexual repression. That pretty much sums up the pilgrims.”
“Sexual repression?” Raising his eyebrows, David smirked. “The last class sounds interesting. Why were the pilgrims repressed when it came to shagging?”
“A strict moral code leading to scandalous affairs.”
“Really? I like the last part.”
I tried to keep my eyes from bugging out. I bet you do, I thought. Time to tone things down, so I said, “The affairs just lead to self-mutilation. Reverend Dimmesdale deals with his by burning a big letter A for adultery into his chest.” I looked over at Adam, who gave a nervous laugh. I guess he didn’t like hearing about Dimmesdale again.
David turned his body so it was toward me, and he crossed his arms, settling into our conversation. His voice got a little lower and kind of sexy. “That part doesn’t sound like much fun to me. What do you think?”

My Thoughts:

Even though the evidence of malnutrition shows on my body, I feel so out of control that I am powerless to stop it.

Sanctuary of Mine by S. Pratt was an overwhelming read. I've read books about human trafficking, prostitution, and all those other tough topics people are uncomfortable talking, reading, or even discussing. But I have never read a book like Sanctuary of Mine that really lets the reader inside the mind of an anorexic or bulimic. S. Pratt really lets the reader see, experience, and understand a person who is suffering from an eating disorder.

I punish myself. I starve myself. I torture myself, mentally and physically.

In the beginning of Sanctuary of Mine we learn right away that Mackenzie is suffering from an eating disorder. Like I said before when I read Sanctuary of Mine I was overwhelmed with all of Mackenzie's suffering. Not only is she suffering from an eating disorder, but her parents are divorced and can't stand to be in the same room. Her parents divorce is what leads to her eating disorder. I've read about these disease before (did a research paper on it in High School), and this is just a very horrible disease. I can not even imagine what it would be like to suffer from any type of eating disorder- in second thought I can imagine now after reading Sanctuary of Mine. From the beginning Mackenzie is fragile, puts ups walls to not let people in her life, and she is fighting her eating disorder by herself. As the story progresses she becomes confident with herself, lets people in her life that support and help her, and she becomes a whole different girl. I rode the emotional roller coaster ride with Mackenzie's character right from the beginning and until the end. It was one of the most overwhelming roller coaster I've ridden.

"I think she'd be worth the fight."

I loved Tyler's character in Sanctuary of mine. I am just going to come out with it, because it was one of the things that kind of bothered me from the book. S. Pratt provides Mackenzie's POV and Tyler's POV. The only problem I had with this, was that Tyler only had a few chapters in his POV. I enjoyed reading from his POV, but I was sort of expecting the usual switch of POV that most authors do (Girls POV, Guys POV, Girls POV, Guys POV, etc...). Now that I got out of the way, let me just say that I loved Tyler. His character is thoughtful, caring, and lovable. I would have not expected this much from a jock in High School, but it is understandable because he suffered a great loss. As the story progresses he does not change, only his physical appearance does ;).

There is something, rather someone inside of me that he's unleashed ...

Mack is the kind of chick that I'd break all the rules for.

Mackenzie's and Tyler's relationship at the beginning of the book is like walking on glass- being super careful not to let anything slip-but at the same time they can not hide their physical attraction towards each other. Tyler knows from the start that Mackenzie has an eating disorder, but he still loves her and feels a strong pull towards her. Mackenzie does not know that Tyler knows that she has an eating disorder. So both of them are careful not to let anything slip that might ruin the progress of developing a relationship. But there is something huge that happened in Tyler's life that Mackenzie can not find out about, or else all will come down hill. The one thing I love about their relationship is, the support they both show towards each other. Now, once they both go their separate ways (won't tell you why) they still think about each other. I love the way S. Pratt made time go by before they reunite again :D!

Learning to love, learning to let go. Sometimes they are life's most valuable lessons.

Just when Mackenzie and Tyler have coped with so much- dealing with her eating disorder and the years apart from each other- S. Pratt throws us another heartbreaking event! This time I seriously cried my eyes out. Right from when the event happens I knew that everything was going to break down. I felt all of Mackenzie's pain again, and I cried with her throughout the whole thing. I am telling you this was such an overwhelming read for me.

I'm ready to live my life to the fullest. I want Tyler to know that I'm going to grab every single opportunity that is presented to me with both hands and run with it.

Sanctuary of Mine by S. Pratt was a overwhelming emotional roller coaster ride. S. Pratt presents us what is like to suffer from an eating disorder through her main character, Mackenzie. There has not been a book that I've read where I am completely sucked into the mind and the life of a person suffering from an eating disorder. I cried, suffered, loved, laughed, and felt all of these and more emotions through Mackenzie's character and Tyler's character. S. Pratt has gained a new fan of her writing and from her novel Sanctuary of Mine :D!

My Thoughts:

Well, sometimes paradise isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Where do I begin? Heartbeat by Faith Sullivan was totally different from the other New Adult contemporary romance books I've read. It is just full of unexpected events. I loved the story, because it is just so different from what I've read. There is your typical helpless and broken girl falls in love with the sweet and caring boy, but the story itself does not make it seem like that. I know I am getting ahead of myself here, but the ending left me shocked. I had to re-read it twice to comprehend what had just happened.

Everything he does seems to draw me in.

There's some invisible force pulling me toward this girl. I can't explain it, but I can definitely feel it.

The two main character's, Katie and Adam, meet in a very unexpected circumstances. Who would ever think that you would have an instinct attraction and connection to a paramedic? The moment they lay eyes on each other, there is an instant connection that they can't explain. I enjoyed reading from both Katie and Adam's POV, but there were times in the story that it just felt that it was a repetition from the others POV. I mean it is obvious that they are feeling the exact same connection and emotions towards each other, but I really didn't like re-reading the same thing over.

It is second nature for me to shut people out.

I liked Katie's character :). At first she does come off as being snarky, because this girl doesn't live in a perfect world. Her mother is not in her life, her father is way overprotective and obsessive with having her be in his house, and the only hope she has in her life is her grandmother. I seriously hated her father, because he is just creepy, violent, and possessive of her life. I would have loved to know what happens with Katie's mother, because we really don't know a lot about her. As the story progresses, Katie starts getting courage and being a little bit more independents. But she is just so fragile that she can't live without having someone to take care of here. I loved that she stood up to her father, but I did not like how weak her character was.

I wanted a fresh start, free from any entanglement.

Adam's character is a whole different story. I also liked his character, and I think I liked him more than Katie. At first, his character did not interest me much, but as I kept reading I found out that he is a guy that any girl would fall for. Adam is just your typical good boy-protective, caring, loving, and would jump in front of a bullet to protect the girl he loves. But of course he has a few skeleton in his closest that catch up to him in the new life he is building with Katie.

She is mine, and I am hers. It's as simple as that.

Faith Sullivan delivered a story of love between two people that have an instant connection and attraction towards each other the first moment they lay eyes on each other. But there are a lot of obstacles and situations they have to face in order to be together. Katie and Adam's story is how one guy can help a girl conquer her fears by helping her bring her heartbeat back to life. HeartBeat is just one of those books that you can sit down and read in one sitting. You will never know what to expect and the ending is just one of those 'what just happened here' moments.

Final Verdict: 4 Stars

Review: Charade by Cambria Hebert

Title: Charade
Author: Cambria Hebert
Series: Heven and Hell #2
Publication Date: May 18, 2012
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Source: Copy provided by author

Description from Goodreads:
Dying at the hands of a psycho was a shock. Having my life returned to me by an angel was incredible. Being named a Supernatural Treasure and being given Sam as my guard was pretty darn awesome. Acquiring a debt for it all - well, I should have seen it coming. Now here we are, fighting demons from hell, caring for a boy that I just don't trust and traveling to faraway places to return a treasure to its rightful place. Nothing is as it seems. Everyone wears a mask, everyone puts on a charade. It's up to us to separate the truth from the lies and reality from fiction. A hard task when my new reality involves fallen angels, witches and dragons...and did I mention hell? Anchoring me down through it all is Sam. Sam who must face tragedies of his own and is put to the test again and again. If we fail in our task, life as we know it - life as you know it - will end. Forever.

My Thoughts:

I was not disappointed with the second book in the Heven and Hell Series :D!

*****Spoilers for the first book in the series*****

Heven has been given her life back by the angel, Airis, and has been named a
Supernatural Treasure. That is not all, Sam (a hell hound) has been assigned as her guard against all evil. Now, they both have a mission to go to the Catacombs in Rome and return the Treasure Map, which is an important list of people who are meant to do good things on earth. If this list falls into the hands of a Demon, the lives of the people on the list will end. Both Heven and Sam are determined to get the Treasure Map to Rome, but once they arrive in Rome all Hell breaks lose.

There are three new characters, Gemma, Henry, and Logan in Charade.
Gemma was briefly mentioned in Masquerade- she was the girl that gave Sam the bracelet. I seriously did not expect her to be that young, because when she was mentioned in Masquerade I thought she was way older lol. I won't say a lot about her, because I don't want to spoil the book :).

Logan was mentioned in the last chapter of Masquerade. I could tell that his presence in Sam and Heven's life was going to bring trouble. His actions throughout the whole story just screamed out that he was definitely bad news, and that there was something evil deep inside of him.

Henry is also a new character, and let me just say that I am not a fan at all. I was surprised to find out who he was by the last few chapters, because I was totally not expecting him to be that evil. I knew that he was bad just by his actions throughout the book, but was totally not expecting him to be a demon.

I seriously could not put this book down, because it was just a great read! I loved reading from both Sam's and Heven's point of view, because there are parts within the story that can only be seen through either one of their side. Now, the mystery behind Kimber, Heven's friend, and Logan just kept me reading. There was also the big revelation on why Cole feels a strong Connection with Heven. This totally made my jaw drop to the floor, because I was not expecting this turn in the story.

I would definitely recommend everyone to read this book. If you loved Masquerade then you will love Charade. Plus, the cover is just gorgeous :D!
